For those that are interested in consuming extra protein in the form of supplements cheap protein powder is an attractive and convenient solution, or at least on the surface.  In general everyone is interested in watching their waistline as well as their wallet at the same time, which is what led to this article.

There are many contrary thoughts in this arena.  The food purists general feel that a raw plant based protein is of higher benefit to the body on a whole.  Muscle interested folk however will suggest that the value of the animal based proteins is more powerful to building the muscle mass they desire.

Moderation is Always Key

There is lots of information on toxic conditions that arise through the ongoing use of whey protein powder in the diet.  As with anything the important thing to recognize is that this is not ‘real food’.  Real food is living and offer life force to the end user.  Whey is so highly processed there is definitely none of this when all is said and done.

That being said is it better to eat those sugary muffins on the go or have a protein shake?  Well the answer is slightly obvious but really depends on your goals.  If you want to keep your blood sugar levels in check and prefer to not skip a meal then a whey protein shake may be a great idea.  If on the other hand you are having two – three meals a day that are whey protein shakes you really want to examine the consequences to this type of diet.

Protein Powder Recipes

One of the best ways to take advantage of protein is in protein powder format.  You can make a shake super simple just by adding a scoop of your favorite protein powder into a cup of milk, juice or water to make a protein shake.  For some this convenience is great and for others it is far too boring to take on as a new habit.  So for those who like a little more fun in your shakes there are a handful of my favorite protein smoothie drink recipes that include plain proteins as well as flavored.

 

Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake

1/4 cup pumpkin puree

1 cup skim milk / soymilk / almond milk / hemp milk

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (or 1/4 t. cinnamon, 1/8 t. cloves, 1/8 t. ginger)

3 dates

1/4 cup Cool Whip / Vanilla yogurt / Vanilla Kefir

3 cup ice cubes

Place pumpkin, milk, protein powder, spices, dates, cool whip or yogurt, and ice cubes in blender container; process until slushy.  If you have plain protein powder you can use that instead and add in a tbsp. of vanilla for flavoring.

 

The Basics

2 Tbsp organic protein powder

1 cup water

1 ripe banana

1 handful blueberries

1 tsp greens drink powder

Place all the ingredients in the blender and process till smooth. Don’t be fooled by the name basic is sometimes best.


Fruit Medley Supreme

1 – 2 scoops protein powder

4 Strawberries

8 Cherries without seeds

5 Peach slices

1/2 Banana

1 cup Milk

Blend the assorted fruits with the milk, begin adding the powder as the texture becomes smooth. For non-dairy, you can also replace milk with orange juice.

 

High Energy Protein Smoothie

1/4 cup almonds

1/2 cup raisins

1 banana cut into chucks

1-2 scoops protein powder

1 cup of soy or almond milk

1/2 cup ice cubes

Blend the almonds, raisins, banana, protein powder, milk, and ice cubes until a smooth texture is formed. Make sure to blend well unless you like almond chunks! There is lots of protein in here along with healthy fats. Add more raisins for extra sweetness.


Blueberry Boon Smoothie

1-2 scoops Hemp Protein

3/4 cup blueberries

1 cup milk

Dash of cinnamon

3-4 ice cubes

Mix the ingredients, blend, and drink.

 

Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

1-2 scoops Hemp Protein

1 ripe banana

3/4 cup milk

1-2 tablespoon of natural peanut butter

3-4 ice cubes

Mix the ingredients, blend, and drink.

 

Chocolate Haven Shake

1 cup water

15 raw almonds

1/2 tsp. coconut extract

1-2 scoop healthy protein powder – chocolate flavor

Stevia or Dates or Sweetener to taste (optional)

3-5 ice cubes

Blend the almonds until creamy smooth in 1/2 the water.  Add and blend the rest of the ingredients until desired consistency. If you don’t have chocolate protein you can use plain and add in Hersey’s Chocolate syrup.  It has lots of sugar but not other additives.
